Why Skive Your Conveyor Belts?

Why Skive Your Conveyor Belts MDS of Michigan

We have had customers call us after a conveyor belt splice failed and assume the fastener was the problem. But after talking through the application, belt thickness, cleaner setup, and installation, the real issue is sometimes the belt prep.

Before a mechanical fastener is installed, the belt needs the right surface for that fastener to grab and sit correctly. That is where belt skiving matters. Skiving removes part of the belt’s top cover so the fastener can sit lower, grip better, and create a cleaner splice.

Field lesson: A good splice starts before the fastener goes on. Proper belt preparation can be the difference between a splice that holds and one that causes repeat downtime.

What Does a Belt Skiver Do?

A belt skiver removes part of the top cover of a conveyor belt before mechanical fasteners are installed. Instead of the fastener sitting high on top of the belt cover, skiving lets the fastener sit closer to the belt carcass.

Simple explanation: Skiving helps create a lower-profile splice, better fastener engagement, improved belt cleaner compatibility, and a cleaner mechanical fastener installation.

That lower profile matters. A properly skived belt can help the splice pass more smoothly over pulleys, under belt cleaners, and through other conveyor components. This can reduce splice interference and help protect both the fastener and the conveyor system.

Skiving is especially useful when a belt has a thicker top cover. If the cover is not removed, the fastener may not fully engage the stronger belt carcass underneath. That can lead to a weaker splice, uneven fastener installation, or premature splice failure.

A good skive should be consistent, straight, and matched to the belt and fastener being used. If the skive is too shallow, the fastener may sit too high. If the skive is too deep or uneven, it can weaken the splice area.

In general, belt skiving helps create:

  • A lower-profile splice
  • Better fastener engagement
  • Improved belt cleaner compatibility
  • Less splice interference
  • A cleaner, more professional installation
  • Longer splice life in many applications

For maintenance teams, skiving is a small preparation step that can make a big difference. A better-prepared belt usually means a better splice, fewer issues during operation, and less downtime from splice problems.

Benefits of Skiving Conveyor Belts

Longer Splice Life

Skiving helps the fastener sit properly in the belt, which can reduce stress on the splice.

Lower Profile

A lower splice profile can improve compatibility with belt cleaners, pulleys, and other conveyor components.

Stronger Splice

Removing the top cover helps the fastener engage the belt more effectively for a stronger installation.
