How Do I Know When to Replace a V-Belt?

How Do I Know When to Replace a V-Belt MDS of Michigan

A customer once called us because a machine in their plant was starting to squeal every morning. The motor was running, the pulley was turning, and the belt was still in place, but something was not right.

The issue was simple: the V-belt was worn out.

V-belts are made to transfer power from one pulley to another. Over time, heat, friction, tension, dust, oil, and normal use can wear the belt down. If you wait too long to replace it, you may end up with slipping, lost power, broken belts, or unexpected machine downtime.

Power loss adds up: A new, properly installed V-belt drive can operate at 95% efficiency or higher, but slipping from wear or poor tension can reduce efficiency by as much as 5% over time.

Common Signs You Need a New V-Belt

  • Cracks: Small cracks on the inside of the belt mean the rubber is drying out or wearing down.
  • Squealing: A high-pitched noise often means the belt is slipping or losing grip.
  • Glazing: A shiny or smooth belt surface can mean the belt has been slipping against the pulley.
  • Fraying: Worn edges or exposed cords are a clear sign the belt should be replaced.
  • Stretching: If the belt no longer holds proper tension, it may not transfer power correctly.
  • Burning smell: Heat from slipping can create a hot rubber smell around the drive.

Quick tip: If one belt in a multi-belt drive is worn, replace the full matched set. Mixing old and new belts can cause uneven load sharing.

Why Replacing a V-Belt Early Matters

A worn V-belt does more than make noise. It can reduce efficiency, put extra stress on bearings and pulleys, and eventually stop production. Replacing the belt before it fails is usually cheaper than dealing with downtime after it breaks.

Rule of thumb: If the belt is cracked, glazed, stretched, frayed, or slipping, it is time to replace it.
