How to Measure Roller Chain Pitch

The fastest way to identify what roller chain you have is by measuring the chain’s pitch. Chain pitch determines sprocket compatibility and is one of the most important measurements for keeping a chain drive running correctly.

To measure roller chain pitch, use a caliper to measure from the center of one chain pin to the center of the next chain pin. For example, if the center-to-center distance is 0.50 inches, the chain has a 1/2-inch pitch, which corresponds to ANSI #40 roller chain.

For greater accuracy, especially on worn or stretched chain, measure across several pitches and divide by the number of spaces measured. This helps reduce error from wear, dirt, or slight pin movement.
