Installing a Double Split Taper Bushing: A Step-by-Step Guide

MDS of Michigan DST Bushing Sheave Installation

Double Split Taper Bushings (DST Bushings) are essential components in many industrial applications, providing a secure and reliable connection between shafts and taper bushed pulleys (or sheaves) or shafts and split taper bushed sprockets. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a successful installation:

Preparing for Double Split Taper Bushing Installation:

  1. Clean the Surfaces: First, thoroughly clean the shaft, bore, and taper surfaces of the bushing to remove any dirt, grease, or debris.
  2. Degrease the Cap Screws: Clean the cap screws to ensure a secure fit and prevent any lubricant from interfering with the installation process. DO NOT USE LUBRICANTS OF ANY TYPE WITH THIS INSTALLATION. The use of lubricants changes the recommended torque rating.

Installation Process:

  1. Insert the Bushing: Align the unthreaded holes of the bushing with the threaded holes of the hub. Insert the bushing into the hub.
  2. Install the Cap Screws: Next, insert the cap screws and lock washers through the unthreaded holes and into the threaded holes of the hub. Tighten the cap screws by hand, ensuring only a few threads are engaged.
  3. Align the Shaft and Key: Insert the key into the keyway of the shaft and slide the assembly onto the shaft. Position the assembly to the desired location.
  4. Tighten the Cap Screws: Finally, use a torque wrench to tighten the cap screws to the specified torque. Alternate between the cap screws to ensure even tightening.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid Excessive Torque: Over-tightening the cap screws can lead to bushing breakage. Follow the recommended torque values.
  • No Lubricants: Do not use any lubricants during the installation process, as this can compromise the fit and performance of the bushing.
  • Proper Alignment: Ensure that the shaft, bushing, and hub are properly aligned to prevent misalignment and premature wear.

By following these steps and adhering to the manufacturer’s guidelines, you can ensure a successful installation of double split taper bushings.
